Programme overview

Gain a sound understanding of today's building industry, construction methods and building materials. This programme provides you with you the knowledge to help you keep pace with advances in building practices and technology, and to confidently apply your skills in both familiar and unfamiliar situations. Further your ability to plan, implement and monitor a building project. You'll also explore aspects of sustainable building technology practices and integrate this knowledge within the New Zealand building industry.

Exit qualification

Students who complete the first two years of the degree may exit the programme with a Diploma in Applied Technology (Building).

Qualification

Once you've successfully completed this programme pathway you'll receive the qualification: Bachelor of Applied Technology.

Admission requirements

For this programme, you will need the following:

1. 42 credits at NCEA Level 3 or higher including:

  • 14 credits in two different approved subjects; and
  • 14 credits from up to two subjects (approved or non-approved)

2. 8 credits at NCEA Level 2 or higher in English or Te Reo Maori (4 in reading, 4 in writing)

3. 14 credits in NCEA Level 1 or higher in Mathematics or Pangarau

4. Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have one or more of the following:

  • Have achieved NCEA Level 3 and New Zealand University entrance
  • Be able to provide evidence you satisfy our criteria for existing English proficiency
  • Have achieved at least one English proficiency outcome in the last two years

Don’t have NCEA? We also accept:

  • Completion of a relevant endorsement of the Certificate in Applied Technology; OR
  • A relevant qualification at Level 3 on the NZQF or above or an equivalent qualification AND demonstrate your practical abilities by providing a small portfolio of evidence.

Self-Employment and Managing Projects (APPT5111) 15 credits (0.125 EFTS)The purpose of this course is to enable the student to understand the fundamentals of project management, pricing, tendering and quoting, and gain an understanding of self-employment in a small-to-medium enterprise (SMEs) in the residential building industry.
Building Preliminary 2 (BUIT5110) 15 credits (0.125 EFTS)The purpose of this course is to enable the student to combine a range of technical, analytical and communication skills to prepare a building site for the construction of a non-rectangular two-storey dwelling.
Building Structure 2 (BUIT5111) 30 credits (0.25 EFTS)The purpose of this course is to enable the student to combine a range of technical and analytical processes to be able to theoretically construct the structural components for a non-rectangular two-storey residential dwelling.
Building Envelopment 2 (BUIT5112) 30 credits (0.25 EFTS)The purpose of this course is to enable the student to combine a range of technical, analytical and communication processes for the exterior cladding and interior lining of a non-rectangular two-storey dwelling.
