Vehicle Failure Analysis (APTE7502)

Level:
7
Credits:
15 (0.125 EFTS)
Compulsory:
No
Aim:
To enable students to analyse mechanical failures in vehicles and develop strategies for their prevention or minimization.
Pre-requisites / Co-requisites:
Students must be admitted to the Bachelor of Applied Technology programme to enrol in this course. Pre-requisite: APTE5201.
Topics include:

1. Role of mechanical, thermal, chemical and electromagnetic factors in materials failure
Mechanisms of failure
static overloading, impact, wear, fatigue, corrosion, creep, thermal shock, chemical embrittlement and their combinations
2. Causes of failure
design flaws, inadequate material selection, insufficient testing and control, manufacturing mistakes, operational errors and maintenance induced failures
3. Failures in vehicle systems
independent, dependent and cascading failures
Gradual deterioration and sudden loss of normal function
Severity of failure consequences
rating for vehicle components and systems
4. Failure investigation technics
Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA)
Failure scenario reconstruction
Forensic engineering - initial observations, data collection, analysis and experiments
Estimation of failure probability
Strategies, procedures and algorithms for failure prevention or minimization
