Students must be admitted to the Bachelor of Applied Technology programme to enrol in this course. Restriction: TTEC5310.
Topics include:

Appropriate selection from following topics
Classes of materials
Awareness of classes of materials such as metals, polymers, ceramics and glasses, biomaterials (timber), composites (cement-aggregate, fibre-resin).
Sources, extraction and conversion processes. Enhanced properties from combinations of materials such as alloys, concretes, fibre-resin composites; Treatment processes and effects.
Significant properties
Mechanical properties
tensile/compressive/shear strength, stiffness/elasticity, toughness/ductility, hardness.
Thermal conductivity, thermal expansion, electrical conductivity. Other properties as needed for particular technologies.
Performance
Awareness of testing, measurements and specifications of material properties. Range of performance - optimum/failure. Relative performance of different materials.
Relationship of properties and performance of materials to micro-structures of materials eg. crystalline, cellular, imperfections.
Applications
Focus on a particular material in a chosen industry. Aptness of the material for chosen applications in terms of its properties and performance characteristics
May include historical trends, costs, and sustainability themes of usage.
