Veterinary Medical and Surgical Care (Sem A) (NSCI6104-SA)

Aim: 
To enable students to manage and apply the principles and practices of veterinary nursing care in a range of clinical situations.
Pre-requisites / Co-requisites: 
Students must be admitted to the NZ Diploma in Veterinary Nursing to enrol in this course. Co-requisite: NSCI6101. Pre-requisite: NZ Cert in Animal Technology (Vet Nurse Asst). Students must enrol in both NSCI6104-SA & NSCI6104-SB to complete the course.
Topics include: 

-Surgical and medical nursing protocols and practice
preparing for advanced surgical procedures, sterile assistance in surgery, maintenance and preparation of advanced surgical instrumentation
management of wounds, bandaging, barrier nursing and hygiene, treatment plans and evidence based practice to provide patient-centred care, monitoring and managing the needs of hospitalised patients
(including compromised patients). Endoscopy, ECGs, chemotherapy, fluid therapy, physiotherapy, and drug calculations.
-Emergency patients
first aid and triage -Dentistry
dental procedures, charting, identifying areas of concern for the veterinarian, scaling, polishing, and dental care plans.
-Veterinary nursing services
veterinary nurse clinics, patient admission and discharge.
-Preventative health care
preventative health clinics, life-stage appropriate health assessments, client consultation, diagnostics for preventative health assessments.
-Nursing of exotic animals -Applied nutrition
nutrition for preventative health, and nutritional support for patients.
