Aim: 
To develop an understanding of the basis of the taxonomic classification of the major animal groups, their phylogenetic relationships and how different animal forms have adapted to different ways of living.
Pre-requisites / Co-requisites: 
Students must be admitted to the Bachelor of Applied Science programme to enrol in this course.
Topics include: 

- The Animal Kingdom
taxonomy of animals; the biology of protists, what constitutes the animal `way of life' and the development of invertebrate body plans;
- Animal adaptations - the invertebrates
Locomotion, feeding, reproduction in different invertebrate groups
Exoskeletons and adaptations for living in dry terrestrial environments, diversity of arachnids and insects,
- Animal adaptations - the vertebrates
The link between invertebrates and chordates
Adaptive radiation of fish
Vertebrate adaptations for living dry terrestrial environments
Diversity of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals
