"I had been working in the arts in both New Zealand and Australia for the past 10 years, but felt that it was time to upskill myself. This programme really gives you so much freedom! Its scope can be very broad or very narrow, depending on where you want to go. What's been really cool and quite unexpected is that since graduating I've been approached by several theatre companies around the world who want to stage my Unitec graduating script 'The Idea of America'. I was completely stunned that they had even heard about it, let alone wanted to put it on. Writing the play was a lot of work and I never would have got it to the place I did without the help of Unitec and in particular Gary Henderson. If anyone out there is interested in writing, seek him out - he's the dalai lama of playwriting!

It's definitely a programme where you get out what you put in. Be strong in your goals but make sure you take the time to listen to the recommendations of others! There are some amazing tutors at Unitec who will be able to help you. This programme really gives you so much freedom and its scope can be very broad or very narrow, depending on where you want to go. I found it was very much about adapting on the go, and this is a crucial skill for working in the New Zealand creative sector. And make sure you network - everyone you're studying with will at some point be out in the industry as well."
