Profile

Esther Leigh applies a sensibility to painting, sculpture and photography that originally seemed like that of a mark obsessed printmaker. Some of her early work of the late eighties used graphite to create traces that seemed weightless, delicate wisps or smudges that drifted like barely detectable amoebae across the cornea of one's eye. Other works - glass boxes - featured amorphous images that delighted in their vagueness. Leigh's interest in the ways of light passing through translucent surfaces is similar to that of Californian artists in the seventies like Larry Bell and Robert Irwin, examining sight and how we perceive spatial ambiguity.

Recent work of photographed papier-mache models through sandblasted glass, reference white icy landscapes and imaginary wildernesses drifting in frozen water. Such scenes are related to the boxed landscapes of Dutch artist Mariele Neudecker but not as literal. They are more ambiguous, and like the contents of the vertical glass boxes, have a weightlessness and perhaps a timelessness.

Esther is a graduate of Elam School of Fine Arts, holding Bachelor and Masters degrees.  In 1996 she was the Olivia Spencer Bower Fellow, and in 1998, the Artist in Residence at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery. She recently exhibited at Galerie Romerapotheke in Zurich.
