School overview

Foundation Studies and Bridging Education

Our foundation and bridging programmes reflect a range of vocational pathways that give students skills and opportunities to get where they want to go, including Biodiversity, Nursing, Architecture, Business, Social Work, Sport, Recreation and Exercise, Screen Arts, and Art and Design.

Our programmes have been designed to support our students to become effective members of their communities and the workforce. This collaborative learning environment is a place where students from many different cultures, age groups and backgrounds can build life skills that will sustain them, their whānau, and communities.

Our lecturers guide students to develop the skills and knowledge that they need in order to progress academically and to build their confidence to achieve their career goals.

English Language

Our English programmes provide a diverse learning environment, with students from many different backgrounds and cultures. There are shared lunches, welcome ceremonies for new students, and student advisers who look after our international, refugee and permanent resident students.

We encourage students to practice what they learn in our language labs. Some of our English language programmes include work experience, and our language teacher programmes include teaching practice and classroom observation.

The Language Studies group is also home to our award-winning IELTS Test Centre, where English language students can take the IELTS test right here on campus. Students can also use this facility to demonstrate their English language ability for a programme of study or a job.

Liaison Interpreting

Students who are fluent in more than one language, and/or are already working or volunteering as an interpreter and want a formal qualification, can study liaison interpreting at Unitec to become a qualified interpreter.

Supported Learning

Our supported learning programmes help support those with a learning difficulty or disability to be independent and confident members of their communities by developing skills and knowledge for employment and enhancing personal development.
