JOB: Apprentice Electrician, Intermech Ltd, Auckland
QUALIFICATION: National Certificate in Electrical Engineering (Electrician), Certificate in Electrotechnology and Certificate in Applied Technology (Electrical Engineering)
"I’ve always been interested in learning a trade, however my focus was playing rugby league. I was fortunate enough to play with teams such as the North Queensland Cowboys and Kiwis. Once I finished playing league and we returned to Auckland I decided to try Unitec’s electrical engineering programme. I now work as an apprentice electrician for Intermech, a leading provider of compressed natural gas refuelling solutions. Whenever a new package is built I get to fault find and test electrical components to ensure everything is running correctly before the package is exported to a customer oversees. Next, I want to complete all the on-the-job standards I need to become a registered electrician.
I was conscious of being a mature student, however the lecturers and dynamics of the students made me feel comfortable. I liked the hands-on learning and not having to sit in a classroom all day reading. Without the qualifications I completed at Unitec, I wouldn’t be working where I am today."
