JOB: Site Engineer, Fulton Hogan

QUALIFICATION: Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil)

"I've always been a practical person. I like building things and figuring out how they work. Now I build structures like bridges, retaining walls and motorway interchanges. It's really versatile - some days I'm on site all day and others I'm in the office. I wasn't expecting to move up the company so quickly. I even got a company car which I didn't expect in my first year out of uni!

The degree programme at Unitec is very practical with lots of site visits and projects that are based on real-life construction work. This really helped to make sense of what we learnt in the classroom, and helped me realise it's what I want to do. I'm really proud of my IPENZ Award for graduating top of my class, and the Hynds Engineering Award I got at the end of my studies. I finished my first job last year, which was a huge achievement for me. It's so rewarding to see the end product and think 'oh yeah, I built that'."
