After growing up in Gisborne, Vicky started tertiary study in Napier but decided to change direction. She started working in a small photography business making phone calls, helping out and sorting out the production, only doing her own photography at friends’ weddings.

When she said she was too old to study photography, a photographer she was working with said that was rubbish! “What’s holding you back?” So she applied and started a Bachelor in Design and Visual Arts at Unitec.

As an adult student she found it hard to focus and concentrate “I found it really, really intense.” But in the second year she found her niche, “I’m not used to someone telling me what to do. I needed to get over that.”

“A friend told me to apply, so I did and then forgot all about it. When I found out I got the part, I thought ‘wow, cool’, I was buzzing about it. When the film crew came over the whole family were excited, the flat was clean for a whole month!”

Vicky is about to start her final year and is already planning on starting up her own “little business” – Vicky Te Puni photographer. She says that this year is all about “my creative stuff”, if you want to follow Vicky’s year, see how it goes here.
