Programme summary

Develop a thorough understanding of the business world, accounting, banking, commercial law, economics, finance, management and marketing. Real-world assignments will give you a chance to apply your knowledge, and our close links with the business community ensure that what you learn is relevant to your future business career.

Do you want to work in accountancy? Accountants are instrumental in the creation of wealth. It is not enough to be merely a number cruncher – today’s accountants have to have a sound understanding of a broad range of business principles to help companies achieve their financial goals. As a graduate of the New Zealand Diploma in Business, specialising in accounting, you’ll be equipped with skills in the technical aspects of accounting and will be in a position to offer technical support to an accountant or financial officer.

Gain a sound understanding of accounting, commercial law, economics, finance, management and marketing. You’ll also develop your communication, problem-solving and decision-making skills, and learn to work independently and as part of a team.

Industry recognition
The New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA), the professional organisation for accountants, recognises the accounting option of the New Zealand Diploma in Business as the necessary tertiary study requirement for membership of the NZICA College of Accounting Technicians (AT).

Flexible study options
To help you fit study around your other commitments, you can also study the programme on a part-time basis, and some courses are offered as evening classes. Highly motivated and capable students may also be able to complete the programme in a shorter timeframe.

Want to become an accountant?
To qualify as an accounting technician and staircase your way up to become an accountant, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Successfully complete the New Zealand Diploma in Business accounting option; and
  • Have two years' relevant professional experience; and
  • Pass the NZICA Foundations Programme.

To complete the New Zealand Diploma in Business accounting option, you must successfully complete a total of 12 courses. Throughout the course of your studies you will gain a sound knowledge of the principles and practice of accounting, preparing you for your future career. The accounting option includes a total of six compulsory courses, five core accountancy courses and one elective course.

Exit qualification
If you complete any six New Zealand Diploma in Business courses, with a minimum of four courses at level 5 or above, you can apply for a level 5 Diploma in Business Studies. You can apply for this diploma as a milestone award if you are continuing on to complete the New Zealand Diploma in Business or as an exit qualification if you leave the New Zealand Diploma in Business.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet the general, discretionary or special admission requirements. Applicants must also meet the English language requirements. Applicants may be interviewed.

General admission

Applicants must:

  • Have a minimum of 50 NCEA credits at level 2 or higher on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) with a minimum 12 credits at level 2 or higher in each of three subjects from the approved subject list, including a minimum of:
    • Eight credits at level 2 or higher in English or Te Reo Māori, of which four credits must be in Reading and four in Writing, or equivalent; and
  • Have a minimum of 14 credits at level 1 or higher in Mathematics or Pangarau on the NQF, or equivalent.

Discretionary admission (for applicants aged under 20)

Applicants who do not meet the general admission requirements and who are less than 20 years of age when the programme begins may be considered for discretionary admission if they can demonstrate aptitude for study at the required level.

Special admission (for applicants aged 20 and over)

Applicants who do not meet the general admission requirements and who are at least 20 years of age when the programme begins may be considered for special admission if they can provide evidence of aptitude or appropriate work or other experience.

English language

Applicants for whom English is an additional language must:

  • Have an overall IELTS band score (Academic) of no less than 6.0 (with no band score lower than 5.5), or a TOEFL score of no less than 550, or equivalent; or
  • Have an overall IELTS band score (Academic) of no less than 5.5 (or equivalent), in which case they will be considered for the New Zealand Diploma in Business (EAL) option. (This is a full-time, one-semester option that involves undertaking New Zealand Diploma in Business courses with additional support. The decision to enrol students under this provision is at the discretion of the Programme Committee.); or
  • Have an appropriate English language qualification, such as the Certificate in English (Academic), or equivalent.
