A group of Unitec architecture students banded together to design and build a holiday home to raise money for KidsCan, a national charity aimed at helping disadvantaged children.
The house is a collaboration of 32 Unitec Master of Architecture (Professional) students, under the guidance of Associate Professor Dave Strachan and Strachan Group Architects.
Strachan put the project to his students after he was approached by celebrity builder and KidsCan ambassador, John ‘Cocksy’ Cocks, about participating in the charity project.
Currently sited in Mangawhai Heads, the four-bedroom home is 118m2 in total, made up of a 46m2 living area and a 72m2 sleeping area.
The sleeping/bath pavilion was completed by 16 Master of Architecture (Professional) students last year, and this year a new group of students worked on a design for the living/dining/kitchen pavilion, which will be constructed by Cocksy and his builders. It is due to be completed prior to the Big Night In telethon on TV3 on 8 and 9 August.
Land for the build period was kindly loaned by Universal Homes, building material and supplies for the house were supplied by Carters.
The house (but not the land) is currently being auctioned off on Sella, on behalf of Big Night In Limited, a KidsCan charity company. Any bid in the auction and the actual purchase of the house building will be governed by the terms. Please make sure you have read and understood these.
