Backflow Survey

This advanced course is available to NZ residents employed in the plumbing or water reticulation industry, and is designed to provide the professional skills required to become a certified cross-connection control surveyor. The course covers key technical, regulatory, procedural and ethical responsibilities in an in-depth manner, building on a student's experience as a certified backflow prevention device tester, water supply engineer, building authority or environmental health officer. It uses a variety of presentation formats, plans and drawings, classroom instruction, field survey components and finishes with a written exam.

Qualification: Graduates who successfully complete this course will receive:

• A Unitec Certificate of Completion, which can be used for Independently Qualified Persons (IQP) registration with territorial authorities; and
• Unit standard credits in designing water supply backflow protection systems.

Fee: $756.20 (incl. GST).
(If you have successfully completed a Unitec 4 day Backflow Testers short course, the fee is $565.90).

Backflow Survey Re-certification

This short course is offered to people who have:

• Successfully completed the 3 day Backflow Survey short course mentioned above, and
• Undertaken a minimum of 10 surveys over a three-year period since completing the Backflow Survey course.

This course is designed to help students gain an in-depth knowledge of the theory and practical reinforcement of testing techniques. It concludes with a written exam, which thoroughly reinforces the knowledge and skills that form the basis for the art and science of professional cross-connection control.

Backflow Testers Cross-connection

Following several requests from territorial authorities, valve manufacturers, plumbers and others within the plumbing industry, this intensive 40-hour Backflow Prevention course has been developed to address the perceived lack of understanding of cross-connection control within the industry. This course represents the best aspects of similar courses currently run in America and Australia , while incorporating NZ legislation and practices. It also covers backflow theory, application, selection, installation practice, survey and testing.

The course is designed for NZ resident plumbers, consultants, water supply engineers, territorial authorities, industrial engineers, design personnel and other people associated with water reticulation. An understanding of water hydraulics is helpful when attending this course, as it focuses on all aspects of backflow, including the annual testing of devices by Independently Qualified Persons (IQPs). The week concludes with a practical and a written assessment, and successful candidates can apply for IQP recognition.

Qualification: Graduates who successfully complete this course will receive:

• A Unitec Certificate of Completion, which can be used for IQP registration with territorial authorities; and
• Unit standard credits in installing and maintaining water supply backflow protection systems

Backflow Testers Re-certification

This short course is offered to people who have successfully completed the 4 day Backflow Cross-connection short course mentioned above and is designed to give you a through understanding of the theory and practical reinforcement of testing techniques. It concludes with a written and practical exam, which reinforces the knowledge and skills of the tester.

Certifying A, B and C EVENING CLASSES

If you are a NZ resident registered plumber and/or gasfitter with two year's work experience and want to increase your level of responsibility within your employment, we recommend you enrol in this short course programme which covers the requirements for Certifying Registration. Students can choose to study either Certifying A and B or A and C and are required to successfully complete the examination set by the New Zealand Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board to qualify for Certifying Registration.

Gain a thorough grounding in business operating skills including basic accounting, commercial law and contracts, and staff management, building technology and project management of plumbing and gasfitting contracts.

Tradesperson Electrical Work Certificate - For Plumbers and Gasfitters

This short course covers the theory and practical requirements, including practical assessment, as set out by the Electricity Regulations and is designed for registered plumbers and gasfitters who are required to work with electrical or electronic appliances, and associated electrical/electronic equipment and fittings.

Topics covered include:

• Safe electrical practice
• Fundamental electrical theory and practice
• Practical electrical work – including testing of plumbing and gasfitting appliances up to 230 volts
• Disconnection, isolation and re-connection of electrical appliances
• Testing of appliances and equipment
• Basic first aid and CPR

The course is delivered in-conjunction with Unitec EST A courses, and an additional session is provided for plumbing and gasfitting appliances.

Qualification:

Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a Unitec Certificate of Attendance.

To gain EWRB certification, successful participants will need to be registered as a plumber or gasfitter, and will need to make application to the Electrical Workers Registration Board (www.ewrb.govt.nz).

Fee: $741.00 (incl GST) or $695.00 (incl GST) for participants who hold a valid First Aid Certificate.

However, as places are limited, it is recommended you apply early. Payment can be made by EFTPOS, by cheque or credit card.
