Pathway to higher education and a rewarding career
Prepare yourself for higher education and improve your career opportunities. Our Foundation Studies programmes will increase your learning ability, along with writing, computer and personal interaction skills. Success in your chosen bridging education programme could even qualify you for a partial rebate on fees for further study at Unitec. We also offer two Special Needs certificate courses and short courses for students with intellectual or learning disabilities.
A great place to study
Many people feel intimidated by tertiary institutions - it can be like going to a foreign country for the first time. But Unitec is different. Classes are small, the teachers are very friendly and you'll be learning in a caring, supportive environment. Group interaction with students from a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds and age groups will also help develop your skills and increase your self-confidence. Special Needs students may also bring a support person with them on certain courses, in order to maximize the learning experience.
Flexible study options
The Certificate in Foundation Studies: Whitinga is a recognised qualification designed to prepare you for success in higher tertiary education. There are several entry levels - we will assess your needs to make sure you start at the right level for you. Then you can choose the general pathway, or specialise in art and design, business, construction and civil engineering, nursing, sciences, social practice or sport. The Special Needs certificate programmes offer students with intellectual disabilities or learning difficulties the opportunity to improve their work related skills, extend their social and community skills, and enhance their personal development while experiencing life at Unitec. These programmes are also offered part time.
Unitec in Schools
We have an entrepreneurial wing (STEP UP) that offers examination preparation classes in both NCEA and CIE to secondary school students. Intensive revision classes are held in the September school holidays, followed by examination preparation classes in the first two weekends of November.
