Programme summary

Gain advanced knowledge of specialist areas within medical imaging. Learn to integrate theory and experience into your professional practice, and improve your research and professional skills.

Are you a medical radiation technologist wanting to further your career and move into senior roles or specialty areas in the health sector? The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science provides advanced education for health professionals. It is not restricted to medical imaging professionals alone – it gives other health professionals the opportunity to study at a postgraduate level in other areas of health, such as clinical management, or education and supervision.

The programme focuses on the conceptual and critical understanding of clinical issues and encourages you to consider innovative approaches to problems within professional practice and leadership, and accept professional responsibility in a rapidly changing clinical environment. You will also learn to integrate theory and experience into your professional practice, and improve your research and professional skills.

To help you combine study with the other demands of your life, classes are a mixture of online learning and on-campus block courses, and you can also study the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science on a part-time basis.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet the general admission requirements and the English language requirements. Applicants may be interviewed.

General admission

Applicants must:

  • Have a recognised bachelors degree in the same or similar discipline, with merit achievement (deemed to be an average grade of B or higher in all level 7 courses); or
  • Hold a professional qualification in a relevant discipline, recognised as being equivalent to at least merit achievement in a bachelors degree; or
  • be able to demonstrate competencies equivalent to a bachelor degree with merit achievement in the same or similar discipline.

Applicants who do not hold a bachelors degree must also:

  • Have a B grade or higher in a level 7 bachelors degree course, or equivalent; and
  • Have a professional qualification; and
  • Provide evidence of clinical experience; and
  • Provide recommendations from their employer(s). 

Evidence of an acceptable MRT qualification is required for entry to MRT-specific courses.

Applicants enrolling in HEAL 8008 Advanced Clinical Practice must also have at least two years' appropriate work experience in medical imaging or radiation therapy at post-qualification level, and be currently registered in the appropriate Scope of Practice from the Medical Radiation Technologists Board or its equivalent.

English language

Applicants must:

  • Have a minimum of 8 NCEA credits in English at level 2, of which 4 must be in Reading and four in Writing, or equivalent; or
  • Have successfully completed studies at level 5 or higher in an English medium; or
  • Have a grade of 5 or better in New Zealand Sixth Form Certificate in an English-rich, or equivalent; or
  • Have an overall IELTS band score (Academic) of no less than 6.5 (with no band score lower than 6.0 in Writing), or a TOEFL score of no less than 575, or equivalent; or
  • Have an appropriate English language qualification, such as the Diploma in English (Advanced), or equivalent.
