Unitec New Zealand | Experience Real World Learning

Show me programmes available

Love animals and the environment? Study for a green career and gain real life, hands-on experience in your area of interest, whether it’s animal management, animal  welfare, veterinary nursing or biodiversity. Take part in work experience placements and apply what you've learnt in our on-campus vet clinics, animal behaviour centre and organic hortecology sanctuary, or with organisations such as Auckland Zoo, MAF or the Department of Conservation (DOC).

Are you passionate about our natural environment?

Our programmes are suitable for both school leavers and mature students, and range from animal behaviour to animal management, animal welfare, biodiversity, captive wild animals  and veterinary nursing.

Real-world learning

Get practical experience while you study thanks to our co-operative arrangements with veterinary clinics, SPCA Auckland, local animal welfare centres, the Auckland Zoo and other captive wild animal facilities, MAF Biosecurity Authority and the Department of Conservation (DOC).

As an animal health and welfare student you develop your skills through placements in our animal behaviour centre, animal handling facility and animal training facilities. If you study veterinary nursing you will also work on real cases in the Unitec Veterinary Clinic and the country's first dedicated Veterinary Specialist Group Referral Hospital, based on our Mt Albert campus.

Focused on protecting the planet’s natural resources, the biodiversity major provides you with a combination of scientific and practical skills, backed up by real life work experience with partnership organisations, such as MAF, Auckland Zoo or the Department of Conservation (DOC).
