Gain the skills to advance your communication career. Deepen your insight into communication within the globalised world through advanced study and research in the field of communication.
Do you want to take your communication career to the next level? Combining a high level of theoretical analysis with real-world application, the Master of International Communication helps you further your knowledge of intercultural, organisational and political aspects of international communication. It is ideal for those with an undergraduate degree in communication or a related discipline, who wish to advance their career prospects in the communication field.
Deepen your insight into communication within the globalised world through advanced study and research on topics such as corporate communication, global communication, strategic communication and political communication.
Choose between a smaller dissertation of 60 credits or a thesis of 90 or 120 credits, giving you a chance to conduct original research in the field of communication.

With internet access, you can download lecture study notes and participate in online discussions whenever and wherever it suits you. Some courses have a more traditional delivery, with in-class lectures which may require regular attendance on campus. The flexible delivery of courses allows you to schedule your studies around work and personal commitments.

Admission requirements
To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet either the general admission requirements or the special admission requirements. Applicants must also meet the English language requirements. Applicants may be interviewed.
General admission
Applicants must:
- Have a recognised bachelors degree in the same or similar discipline, with merit achievement (deemed to be an average grade of B- or higher in all level 7 courses); or
- Hold a professional qualification in a relevant discipline, recognised as being equivalent to at least merit achievement in a bachelors degree.
Special admission
Applicants may be considered for special admission if they hold a qualification in a discipline other than communication. The Programme Committee may recommend a plan of study in the first semester.
English language
Applicants must:
- Have a minimum of eight NCEA credits in English at level 2, of which four must be in Reading and four in Writing, or equivalent; or
- Have successfully completed studies at level 5 or higher in an English medium; or
- Have a grade of 5 or better in New Zealand Sixth Form Certificate in an English-rich subject, or equivalent; or
- Have an overall IELTS band score (Academic) of no less than 6.5 (with no band score lower than 6.0 in Writing), or a TOEFL score of no less than 575, or equivalent; or
- Have an appropriate Unitec English language qualification, such as the Diploma in English (Advanced), or equivalent.
